About the Counselors

All counselors practicing with Midtown Counseling Services will be Master’s-level counselors licensed with the State of Michigan. Counselors will embrace all faiths and every effort will be made to establish an ethnically and culturally diverse staff. Staff will embrace a Christian counseling perspective that will be inclusive, not exclusive. In addition to the positions described below, it is hoped that MCS will employ counselors in an adjunct relationship as well as provide internship opportunities to area seminaries and counseling programs.

Sue Van Wyngarden , MA, LPC: Sue has a passion for those who cannot access Christian counseling, either because they simply cannot afford it, have no insurance, or are blocked by cultural stigma or language. This is a population with serious emotional and spiritual needs and with no where to turn. Sue is gifted in counseling those with marriage and family system issues in addition to grief, loss, anxiety and depression. Sue also specializes in career counseling. Sue has counseled in a variety of settings including the Beacon of Hope, Lakeshore Pregnancy Center, and West Middle School.

Robert Foster , MA, LLPC, CAAC: Robert’s areas of passion and gifting are for those who struggle financially and culturally in seeking and receiving counseling. Robert’s gifting is in the areas of teens and families who are considered “at risk”. Robert also has state and national certification as an addictions counselor and brings considerable experience in addressing addictions, mental health issues, small groups/support groups, and anxiety and depression to Midtown. Robert is currently a counselor with Pine Rest Mental Health Services.

Bob Herman, MA, LPC: a former youth pastor and licensed counselor has been a key counselor for Midtown in reaching adolescents. Bob works in a crisis counseling center in the Grand Rapids area while also doing part-time counseling with Midtown and WAH. Bob will be transitioning away from the crisis center to full-time counseling with Midtown, WAH and the Holland East K-7 Counseling program. Bob will also be offering parenting classes as part of the Holland East program.

Susan Hofland, MA, LLPC: Susan Hofland is new to our organization and has already shown to be an excellent fit for the Holland East K-7 program. Susan is a licensed professional counselor and is already working on site at Holland East doing the bulk of the school counseling including a "Girl Talk" small group for vulnerable young girls at the school.

Kimberly Hoke, MA, LLPC, LLMFT, MCC.  Kim graduated with her Masters of Arts in Counseling at Western Michigan University and began working as a professional counselor for Midtown in the fall of 2018 after interning with Midtown. Kim has proven to be an outstanding counselor, providing play, youth and family therapy. “My passion is helping families survive and thrive.  Life is not always easy and I hope my experiences and training will help others.  I really like Midtown because I see such a wide variety of people.  From 6 years to 68 years old; single mothers to blended families; trauma victims to domestic violence, and everything in between, there is a little something for all of my interest areas.  And, mostly, I appreciate the freedom to share my faith with the clients we serve.”
